UNLV Students Say No Mark Ciavola

UNLV Student elections are today and Thursday. So what? It actually is important stuff. Why? Whoever the president is will make an impact on how students deal with the legislature in the 2013 legislative session. Mark Ciavola knows this, and that’s the only reason he’s running.

You see, Mark Ciavola was against funding the historic trip to Carson City in 2011 which was the largest protest in our capital’s history since the turn of the century. Students made history because they are fed up with cuts to our education. Not Ciavola. He’s against doing what’s necessary to fund higher education in Nevada. He prefers to cut cut cut, year after year like his Republican friends in the legislature have done year after year…leading to tuition increases.

Here’s Mark Ciavola DEFENDING THE REPUBLICAN PROPOSED $162 MILLION CUT TO HIGHER EDUCATION. See if you buy his baloney now.

Mark Ciavola is the worst possible choice a UNLV student could make to represent them. He represents the interests of the wealthy okay, and that’s about it. Oh, if you want to bring guns onto campus, maybe Mark is your guy. He’s been advocating for guns on campus while real student advocates have been tirelessly fighting to keep our education funding at a reasonable level.

Here’s Mark Ciavola arguing college students should stop making excuses for failure, and start learning from the military.”

Oh, and if you are a college student on your parents insurance plan, Mark thinks that is a handout. President Obama’s Affordable Care Act extends coverage on your parents plan until the age of 26. Ciavola and the candidates he’s supported have all said they will repeal that the moment they get the chance.

Ciavola has worked harder than anyone else to elect people to our Congress who want to slash and burn student financial aid, and even eliminate the department of education (Joe Heck).

Don’t be a fool. Don’t vote for Mark Ciavola, Rebels United, and their extreme right wing agenda.

  1. Oh… this is embarrassing now, isn’t it? It turns out Mark Ciavola actually won the election yesterday. And with over 56% of the vote. Turns out misinformation and scare tactics only work when it comes to lefties, I guess.

    • Yes, correction… Title should have read “UNLV Students Deceived by Mark Ciavola”

      BTW, Hitler was elected too.

  2. The money student governments spend is student money collected from students through a per credit fee. The commenter that doesn’t know this is obviously working for the Republican party and is too stupid to research things that don’t fit their ideology.

So, Ciavola opposed STUDENTS USING THEIR OWN MONEY ON THEIR OWN TIME TO PROTEST TUITION INCREASES.
Have fun trying to spin the facts.

  3. I think Mark is paid by someone with a lot of money to become a “student”. He is a pretty old student and he has money to spend? And it seems to me that he spends most of his time campaigning and operating the young republican club. I think he is NOT representative of most of the student body. It will be extremely sad but a sad sample of how people with money infiltrate systems and persuade people to vote against their own best interest.

  4. Couldn’t agree more. Michelle, you are so right that Mark and his Tea Party cronies have to attack the teachers and the system to justify cuts because increasing funding is never an option for conservatives of their ilk. You’ll never hear anything different from them.

  5. Wow, Stephanie can rant a baseless argument quite well without letting any facts get in the way. Same old tired Republican talking points about “waste.” Man, waste is everywhere! LOL

“Millions diverted to CSUN” FYI, CSUN doesn’t get money from the state’s general fund. I don’t think Mr. McAffee was discussing CSUN’s budget at all, which btw is a total of 1 million.

Stephanie excretes snotty remarks and “incessantly whines” about “162 million dollars very badly appropriated funds to a system that failed to produce even a decent graduation rate” without offering a shred of evidence of how it was “badly appropriated.” BTW, people who want to cut our teachers, and our children’s future generally complain about graduation rates because it’s an easy target with little substance, much like most Republican arguments. So I guess Stephanie would argue we should cut K-12 even more because we graduate 50%. Hmmmmm, seems counter intuitive that we would suck the life out of the very thing we supposedly want to fix.

Go around campus and talk to students and professors from various departments and ask them about all the cuts, or how hard they’ve had to fight to keep their program.

Nevada spends some of the lowest dollars in the country on education, and has the lowest tax rate in the nation. And yet Mark Ciavola and his troll cronies here think taxes on mining or businesses that don’t even pay any taxes are all off the table because they are controlled by an extreme TeaParty agenda. That leaves them with only one thing to talk about…CUTS. That’s the only solution they will bring to the table. So they have to attack the system and make wild accusations of WASTE to justify their Teaparty solutions.

  6. Then that’s 162 million dollars very badly appropriated funds to a system that failed to produce even a decent graduation rate. Justin supports funding bad professors, shielding their salaries, anti-accountability, anti-student, and pro-tuition hikes. The crux of your incessant whining is purely grounded on just how much money we can shove into the system without ever finding out whether the education system is effective or not. It doesn’t matter that millions of dollars were irresponsibly diverted by CSUN to hiring stand-up comedians and no-name bands while crying about the budget cuts. What reasonable solution does Justin bring to this debate? Nothing. Nada. Zero. Just a lot of angry, desperate, and irrational babble that a budget cut is equivalent to being anti-education. It’s like if I wanted to save money by cutting down on my gasoline consumption I’d be anti-driving. Or cutting down my expenses for eating out then I’d be advocating starving people. If you’re smarter than a spoon then you wouldn’t fall for Justin’s desperate and senseless hyperbole. Justin’s obsession with shamelessly asserting delusions for facts, it’s sad and we terribly sorry. None of us take you seriously.

Hey genius (UNLVCR troll) What part of $162 million is “a few hundred thousand dollars? Mark favored cutting 162 million from NSHE period. You are a traitor to the student cause if you vote for this yahoo.

  8. Mark is against WASTEFUL spending at UNLV and every student who isn’t a moron like you knows that UNLV wastes a few hundred thousand dollars on subpar faculty members who only care about getting their salaries raised regardless of declining graduation rates. The truth is that we have shoved so much money into an education system with people like you who refuse to realize that there is SOOO much money wasted that could be put to better use than hosting no-name musical bands in school where only few students attend. Other countries are producing so much better students and graduates with far far less money being spent on their education system because they have less waste and accountability is exercised. People attacking Mark and his ticket are the ones who are truly anti-education by supporting the old wasteful spending that has only produced more and more crap education and opposing any attempt to establish any plan of meaningful accountability so that we make sure that every penny we spend is to the benefit of the whole student population. Rebels United all the way!!!

  9. And that picture isn’t even of Mark

  10. This has got to be one of the most desperate articles I’ve ever read. Justin, Mark isn’t anti-education and you know it. If he was then why would he even register and waste time in his classes? He has done an amazing job keep CSUN from blowing a bunch of OUR tuition money on meaningless crap like lunches for CSUN and putting it toward things that will actually benefit the students. Not only does he really care about managing tuition costs (a portion of his platform mind you) he has got to be one of the smartest people I know. He’s been involved with the political system and know show to handle the responsibilities of representing the whole student body. I say, I’d you want the leaders of ou student gov. To be responsible, smart, professional people with integrity then you can’t possible NOT vote for the Rebels United ticket, Mark, Jay, and Sarah. This article is just, to be honest, something a little kid would write to be a meanie to someone he just doesn’t like. Regardless of what you think about mark personally, the fact that he is the most qualified for the job doesn’t change. Vote responsibly! Vote Rebels United!!!!

    • Actually, I personally like Mark Ciavola, and I’ll say that for the record. He is just on the wrong side to be the mouthpiece for UNLV students. We need someone who is against all the cuts we’ve been getting at UNLV, and Mark defends those cuts. Read the facts in my article… no personal attacks.

  11. Justin McAffee

Mark was opposed to the protest, don’t lie. I link to an article he wrote defending the $162 million dollar cuts to higher education. He thinks we should cut UNLV spending. The protest had 1500 students because we don’t want our programs cut or our tuition raised. Don’t buy Mark’s facade about being against tuition increases… That’s a rouse. He is for them. His party is for them. They are also for cutting financial aid, and student health insurance.

    • If students want to protest, they can do it on their own time, with their own money. Did they go during Spring Break? Of course not! They went when they should have been in class. So my daughter went to her classes, and worked, and had to pay fees so some lazy mooches could take a trip to Carson City. When I told her what her $2.47/credit hour was paying for, she got pretty angry! Apparently, these geniuses are not aware that Legislative Sessions are telecast to the Grant Sawyer Building, right here in town. No need to travel. BTW, why do students believe they are entitled to my tax dollars? Why should they be receiving grant money NOT to go to class? I paid my own way through school, and my kids are doing the same. Maybe Mark Ciavola looks older, because it takes longer to graduate if you also work. Then again, there is a 30-year old Georgetown Law student who has lots of time to stir up trouble, “putting out” for the Democratic Party. Ms. Sandra Fluke (rhymes with “look”) attends Georgetown Law on a Public Interest scholarship. This group of students are known as the PILS. That’s right, Sandra Fluke is one of the PILS for 2012: http://www.law.georgetown.edu/pils/CurrentPILS.htm
Scroll down, and you will see Sandra. How appropriate. She has been at this stuff for years–got a nice scholarship to attend Cornell, too.

  12. You guys are all idiots. You dont even know Mark. Yes Mark can be over bearing at times but he is a genuine good person. Your liberal attacks just goes to show how misinformed you are. He didnt oppose the protest in Carson City. He opposed student governemtn paying $15K to send 100 students up there to do it. If students want to protest then they should do it on their own accord. Not more than .05% of those same students that took the free food, free bus ride, and free trip to carson city went to the Las Vegas government buildings and protested. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT

    • Anther thing. Sara Farr is a democrat you fools! How can it be a right wing ticket? Sara Farr and Jay Yoon are smart and educated people. They have great intentions and are the best candidates for office.
The other tickets running have good people too. I am not bashing the other tickets, but if you are in student government you want someone who actually has relationships with the legislature AND Board of Regents. The other tickets couldnt even name one person sitting on the board of regents.

      • Justin McAffee

Tony – WAKE THE F$#% UP! Ciavola is anti-education. HERE ARE THE FACTS!

He helped Joe Heck get elected, who voted to cut the Pell Grant 2 times and is vowing to overturn the new health care act that gives students greater access to health insurance.

Mark supports all the Republicans in the legislature that refuse to do anything but cut hundreds of millions of dollars from education.

He supports Republicans who are haters of gay people, so he is just an Uncle Tom really.

I don’t know Sara, but she is guilty by association… period. If she supports Ciavola, that’s problem enough for me.

  13. This guy is like the Kapos of WWII. He gladly and with delight lures people into trusting his guidance and then shoves them into the ovens of hate and unamerican activities. Loathe him and what he does to the LGBT community!

    • He IS A PART of the LGBT community. You guys have nothing else better to do than bash people you clearly do not even know.

  14. Bryan Breynolds

Students can vote on their MyUNLV accounts starting today… ANYONE BUT MARK CIAVOLA or his ticket.
