No, a swat team did NOT raid a man’s house for not paying a student loan. Yes, Fox News reported the story as such, and many other conservatives and websites have been disseminating the lie since then. Moral: don’t trust Fox News.
The Department of Education did issue the warrant related to a criminal investigation. DOE Press Secretary Justin Hamilton made the following statement:
“While it was reported in local media that the search was related to a defaulted student loan, that is incorrect,” Hamilton said. “This is related to a criminal investigation. The Inspector General’s Office does not execute search warrants for late loan payments.”
“Because this is an ongoing criminal investigation, we can’t comment on the specifics of the case. We can say that the OIG’s office conducts about 30-35 search warrants a year on issues such as bribery, fraud, and embezzlement of federal student aid funds.”
While any home raid should catch our attention, and the reasons should always be held to scrutiny, it’s still too early to jump to any conclusions. That is unless you are Fox News.
Reporting that the raid has something to do with not paying student loans is egregiously irresponsible and outright fraudulent. It seems clear that Fox News knowingly reported the story wrong to disseminate fear. Even though they have changed the story on their website, more than half of the people will have only heard the initial story and not the correction. It’s the Fear Industrial Complex at work.
It stands to reason that Fox News had an agenda with many conservatives recently talking about the elimination of the Department of Education.
In this video, these conservatives are talking about a police state here in the U.S., as if their side has had nothing to do with that. It is conservatives that have denigrated the 4th Amendment, that take the “tough on crime” stance, that have pushed the war on drugs, and that have pushed policy and funding that has tripled the percentage of Americans in the prison system since the early 80s.
It is just comical for these jokers to be talking about a police state and waving their little freedom flags. What’s worse is we know that they are trying to indicate that the left is at fault because they are “big government.” It probably has all the paranoid anti-government folks all in a stir. Since 2008, it has been Fox News’ objective to make everyone afraid of the black guy in the White House. Just despicable.
